Just because it’s May doesn’t mean ski season is over yet! Mary Jane Territory will be open until we can’t ski anymore. And just because the ski resort is still open doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy spring and summer activities. On top of skiing and snowboarding, we have exhilarating activities like rock climbing, white water rafting, and hiking. Also, we have some awesome laid-back activities such as fishing, golfing, or for the ultimate relaxation, eating and drinking at locally-owned restaurants and bars. Read on for the best things to do in Winter Park during May and June.
1) Hang at The Jane Beach
Just because it’s May doesn’t mean ski season is over! That’s right, Mary Jane is planned to stay open well into May this season. Come by for soft snow, live music, and loads of Upslope Mary Jane Ale at The Jane Beach every Saturday until we close. We’ll also have yard games like cornhole and ladder ball, a tanning area, and unique swag drops!
2) Rock Climbing and Aerial Adventures at Adventure Quest
Adventure Quest offers guided outdoor rock-climbing tours in the Winter Park area. Their experienced guides can cater to beginners or more experienced climbers. All equipment is provided, and you’ll get familiar with your gear and learn basic belaying, rappelling, knotcraft and climbing techniques all while experiencing real rocks and real smiles in the Colorado Rockies!
Just down the street from Winter Park Resort sits an Aerial Adventure Park that let’s you climb up to 25-feet. Climbers get hooked into a state-of-the-art belay system that allows you to freely explore and play on 24 separate obstacles all set against a stunning mountain backdrop. Their course is for everyone—from a friendly lower level to a jaw-dropping second story, you choose your level of challenge.
3) White Water Rafting
Book a river trip with MAD Adventures for good times and wet clothes! They offer 2 different river trips that everyone can enjoy, the wickedly awesome class 3 and 4 rapids near Idaho Springs, or the family-friendly Upper Colorado float. MAD Adventures will give you the best rafting trip in Colorado!
4) Hiking
Another must-do activity is strolling through nature and reconnecting with the land. During the early spring/summer season in the mountains, a lot of the high alpine hikes are difficult to access due to snow, so stick to trails at a lower elevation to better ensure the snow is melted. We recommend checking out Fraser River Trail, Chainsaw and Flume Trail, and Jim Creek Trail for some beautiful early season hikes. In addition, check out these Hidden Gems in the area while you’re at it!
5) Fishing
Some of the best fishing in Colorado is right in our backyard. With over 1,000 miles of the Fraser River and Upper Colorado River flowing through the county, there are plenty of spots to try and catch rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout! The Winter Park area has several fly-fishing guides and outfitters. Check out Winter Park Flyfisher or Mo Henry’s Trout Shop for guided trips and more.
6) Golfing
The #1 public golf course in Colorado, Pole Creek, is located just a few miles from Winter Park. With over 27 holes of pristine mountain views and lush meadows filled with native wildflowers, this course will make you want to keep coming back for more. PS – it’s true. Your ball does go farther in the mountains 😊.
7) Local Food & Drink
With over 60 restaurants in the area, Winter Park has a little something for just about everyone! Treat yourself to mouthwatering steak at Deno’s Mountain Bistro, fresh to order fish at Fontenot’s, or authentic cuisine from Nepal, India at Durbar Bistro. Quench your thirst with our local breweries like Hideaway Park, Big Trout, or Fraser River Beer Co. Grab a glass of wine and charcuterie at Adventures Decanted and sip locally distilled spirits at Fraser River Distilling or Idlewild Spirits. Fuel your mountain adventures with good food and drinks.
